When England play the United States on Friday at Al-Bayt Stadium, it will be a chance to score three more points, which would mean qualifying for the Round of 16 for England. But for the Americans, it goes beyond that, which makes the battle that much more fun.
England had one of the strongest performances of any team in the first leg, beating Iran 6-2 to top Group B. Another win would have mathematically secured a play-off spot and probably top of the group after Wales’ defeat to Iran earlier on the same day. The positive goal difference established in an uneven score against Iran is an added advantage in the pursuit of first place.
The US is even more desperate for points given they allowed Wales to equalize late and settle for a draw in the first group leg. But beyond the final score, they are also desperate to show the English that they are to be feared as a rising football power. Since several American players are based in England, there will be no intimidation factor for the Americans.
A US win would put them at the top of the group and make the final day unpredictable. The US will play Iran as England prepare for an all-British clash against Wales by Gareth Bale, who needs a win to keep his tournament hopes alive.

3 hours 17 minutes from the start of the match: If there is one thing to know about this match beforehand, it is that the referee will take charge. Venezuelan official Jesús Valenzuela won the CONMEBOL Referee of the Year award in 2021, but he is known as an absolute yellow card machine.
While CONMEBOL is a yellow card factory in its own right, Valenzuela has issued a huge amount of warnings in its recent match history. Here’s a closer look:
Valenzuela received the CONMEBOL award as the best referee of 2021. He distributes CARDZZZZZZZ.

3 hours 35 minutes from the start of the match: With the game still a few hours away, take a look at my match betting preview here. This is not an ideal read for American fans as I would expect England to win by several goals with a second half choke.
This tournament, however, was extremely difficult to predict, so in no way does this mean that the US has no chance of achieving a result in this match. They are just up against an extremely strong side with a lot of talent!
Present day. England. USA. World Cup. Black Friday.

3 hours 54 minutes from the start of the match: One of the greatest World Cup defeats came in 1950 when the United States defeated England 1-0. England entered the tournament among the favorites, while the United States was a collection of motley players who were not going to compete with anyone.
At the 1950 World Cup @USMNT consisted of part-time amateur players. This group of 11 became legends with a 1-0 victory over the heavily favored English team in the most shocking defeat in the history of the tournament! 🇺🇸 pic.twitter.com/GdizXthGvJ

4 hours 5 minutes from the start of the match: Have you ever wondered why a beautiful game is called “football” in England but “football” in the United States? Here is a brief explanation of why, from yours truly. This is just a recent shift in linguistics!
4 hours 38 minutes from the start of the match: Going a little deeper into the scenario for the United States – “Today vs. England” – is almost pointless. A draw would mean they could mirror whatever Wales did on the final day, and a win means they only need to draw against Iran to advance.
Yet no matter what, the United States needs a final day result against Iran to get through, and probably win. In my opinion, near-zero rates against England is good for the US, as they can now play much more pressure-free without feeling like they need result. They could lose to England by 10 goals and a win over Iran would almost certainly help them win.
– Victory over England: need D or W against Iran to advance
– Draw against England: Need W to advance against Iran
– Lost against England: Need W against Iran to advance AND Wales don’t beat England and compensate GD

5 hours 5 minutes from the start of the match: WHAT result for the USA in the first game of the day. With Iran beating Wales, the United States is in a fantastic position to advance in the group. In fact, now the match with England becomes just a bonus.
Here’s a simple situation for the US to qualify for the playoffs: defeat Iran and you’re in the game. There are a few more quirks, but basically it’s that simple.

Today’s match against England is now a bonus. Defeat, even by a large margin, will not be crushing. Today, the US can score points with almost nothing to lose.
5 hours 15 minutes from the start of the match: For the last two matches, the US will wear blue. This is a kit that was not well received when it first came out.
The USMNT will wear blue for the remaining Group B fixtures against England on Friday and Iran next Tuesday, a spokesman said.

5 hours 30 minutes from the start of the match: The last match between England and the United States in the World Cup will forever be remembered for this shout from England goalkeeper Robert Green, which allowed Clint Dempsey to score a goal and equalize at 1-1.

But did you know that the two protagonists of that moment got together years later to talk about it? Dempsey was emotional about this.

USA – England lineups, team news
Team USA have confirmed all players are healthy and available after a heated debate over whether injury-prone playmaker Gio Reina is healthy enough to come on as a substitute against Wales. After the match, the player and the coach had different accounts.
Whether Reina will start instead of right winger Tim Weah is one of the two big questions for Team USA. The other concerns midfielder Weston McKenny, who looked far from his full form against Wales and was forced to pull away. Leeds United’s Brenden Aaronsohn is in contention for his place in the starting XI.
USA probably (4-3-3, right to left): 1-Matt Turner (GK) – 2-Sergino Dest, 3-Walker Zimmerman, 13-Tim Rome, 5-Anthony Robinson – 11-Brenden Aaronson, 4-Tyler Adams, 6-Yunus Musah – 21-Tim Weah, 24- Josh Sargent, 10 year old Christian Pulisic.
Manager Gareth Southgate has made it clear he will not give Harry Kane a rest for this match despite the England captain taking a hit against Iran that required a scan.
After Harry Maguire recovered from his dizziness after the match against Iran, the only player injured was James Maddison (knee), who has not yet trained with the team, according to reports.
England probably (4-3-3, right to left): 1-Jordan Pickford (GK) – 12-Kieran Trippier, 5-John Stones, 6-Harry Maguire, 3-Luke Shaw – 22-Jude Bellingham, 4-Declan Rice, 19-Mason Mount – 17-Bukayo Saka, 9- Harry Kane, 10th Raheem Sterling
England – USA live broadcast, TV channel
On paper, the Americans are losing out to a stellar English team that showed their muscles in a 6-2 lopsided win over Iran. But the US has never lost to England in a World Cup, and has won and drawn only two matches at this stage.
Team USA will be playing with a chip on their shoulder as an underdog at Al Bayt Stadium and also because they need whatever point they can get after missing out on a victory over Wales. England could secure a play-off spot – and more than likely first place – with a win.
