The Iowa Hawkeyes are one win away from a return trip to Indianapolis for the Big Ten Championship game. Despite starting a 3-4 season and making fans nervous, the Hawkeyes are now just a game against the Nebraska Cornhuskers and missing a second straight Western Big Ten title.
It’s been a wild ride for the 2022 season and it’s notable that the regular season is already coming to an end. But before that happens, Hawkeyes faces another test.
This task, although overcome for seven years in a row, has proved difficult in the last few meetings. Despite Iowa scoring 26 or more points in every game with the Cornhuskers over the past decade, the last four games have been decided by less than a touchdown.
Just three times this season, the Hawkeyes have scored 26 points each, while averaging a miserable 17.5 points per game. But the defense has been amazing, and Kornhusker’s defense may be just what the doctor ordered.
Despite Iowa having a hard time with possession, the Hawkeyes are averaging a more acceptable 24 points per game against a non-nationally ranked defense. Huskers take 108th place. More importantly, they lose almost 200 yards per game on the ground. For Iowa, who is not expected to be the leading target, tight end Sam LaPorte, ground play will be paramount today.
However, over the past few weeks, the Cornhuskers have looked better defensively and lost just 15 points to the Wisconsin Badgers a week ago. Despite five losses in a row, acting head coach Micky Joseph will certainly set his team on fire as he aims to end the season with a major rivalry win.
