We’ve seen countless versions of Good Old Saint Nick on screen, and the holiday season is just around the corner, and we’re about to see another one, this time with David Harbour. His take on Santa Claus, however, has a very interesting twist: Santa might not be as holy and kind as he might seem, and he might actually kick ass. Literally. And if you think about it a little, then it makes sense. I mean this man sneaks into people’s homes all over the world in one night once a year. He had to pick up a few moves. Anyway, here’s everything we know about cruel night.
Plot and synopsis cruel night
cruel night it’s a dark and twisted take on Santa Claus, who turns out to be more than just cookies, candy, and his legendary animal laugh. Count: tenacious but it’s Santa. In the trailer, we watch a group of thugs break into the home of a wealthy family, just hoping to celebrate Christmas to rob them and take their safe with over $300 million inside. As they try to pull it all off, Santa is on his way to the annual Christmas delivery when he is interrupted by hostage takers as he lands over the roof of a house.
The trailer looks very promising and exciting, with David Harbor donning a red hat and beard and using classic holiday items as weapons – lollipops, a bag in which he keeps his gifts, ice skates, Christmas balls – whatever. This Santa obviously takes his “bad or good” list way too seriously, and we’re sitting. Throughout the score clip, we watch Santa use lollipops and ice skates to stab the bad guys and leave hand grenades that coincidentally look like “lumps of coal” in their suits before letting them explode. There’s also, of course, his team of reindeer, which we get a funny glimpse of towards the end of the short trailer.
cruel nightThe official synopsis reads as follows:
“With 87North, uncompromising manufacturers Nobody, John Wick, explosive blonde, Deadpool 2, High-speed train as well as Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw comes a dark holiday comedy that says you should always bet on red.
“When a group of mercenaries break into a wealthy family residence on Christmas Eve, taking everyone hostage, the team is not ready for an unexpected fighter: Santa Claus (David Harbor, Black Widow, Stranger Things) is on the premises, and he’s going to show why this Nick is not a saint.
Cast cruel night
Directed by Tommy Wirkola, whose previous work includes Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters and Norwegian comedy horror series dead snow. cruel night this isn’t his first attempt to turn a classic story into something darker and grittier with the previously mentioned Hansel and Gretel paraphrase, except Kill Bullowhich was a parody of a Quentin Tarantino film. Kill Bill. As for the film’s script, all credit goes to Pat Casey and Josh Miller, who previously worked on the recent film. Sonic the Hedgehog movies.
One of the most interesting parts of the film is its cast. Again, very strange things star David Harbor will play Santa Claus. He is joined by John Leguizamo as Ben, Beverly D’Angelo as Gertrude, Alex Hassel as Skyler and Alexis Lauder as Margie Matthews, and Edie Patterson, Cam Gigandet and André Eriksen in a wider cast.
Ben Leguizamo was confirmed to be the film’s main antagonist, with his character being the leader of the mercenaries who break into the house. As for the family, in addition to being held captive, they have their own dramas. Their matriarch Gertrude (D’Angelo’s character) loves to have her kids fight for her affections (because what dysfunctional Christmas movie wouldn’t be complete without a parental authority that just wants their kids to fight over who should be loved the most) , while her son and his ex-wife (played by Alex Hassel and Alexis Lauder respectively) do their best to get through the holidays together for their daughter Trudy.
Trudy, of course, is played by a wonderful young actress in the form of Leah Brady, with whom Harbor, as shown in the trailer, has a great relationship.
In an interview with Hollywood Reporter for the film, David Harbor shared some interesting thoughts on making the film.
“The great thing about Santa is that I really have to explore him,” the actor said. “We all sit around and tell our kids that some big, fat, funny guy in a red suit is coming down the chimney, eating cookies and giving you a present, but who is this guy? When you really start to get to the bottom and the core of who that person was, it makes sense.”
He also described his experience on the film and working with 87North as one of his most challenging physical roles to date. He said: “This is by far the most difficult physical thing I have ever done in my entire life. We started training at the beginning of December and I felt an exhaustion that I had never felt in my entire life.”
When asked if he thinks cruel night would enter regular Christmas movie rotation, the actor admitted he never considered the possibility during filming.
“My intention is always to just make a great film,” he continued. “It’s not about where it’s going, it’s about what people talk about [Violent Night] it’s something incredible. They’re like, “Oh, this is going to be a Christmas movie that people will watch,” but I didn’t really think about that when I made it. There was much more about this action movie with a soul, but you’re right. I look Miracle on 34th Street as well as Bad Santa and all those movies during Christmas time, so why not watch them that way? I just never considered it.”
