According to a recent trailer, the first part of The Long Dark’s long-awaited expansion, Tales from the Far Territory, is coming to PC on December 5th. The paid expansion will feature new items, game mechanics, and storytelling set in the Outer Territory.
The expansion has been in development since October at Hinterland Games. The Canadian developer will release the long-awaited DLC in several parts over the course of 12 months. As the first installment debuts in December, the expansion will bring many new locations to explore, as well as three new stories, gameplay features, and items that “greatly complement the world of Great Bear Island and the core foundation of the survival game.” “
The trailer teases a large number of regions for the upcoming expansion, including “forgotten railroads, abandoned airfields, and mysterious mines.” Based on what we see in the trailer, it’s safe to say that The Outer Territory has plenty of room to further enhance the sense of isolation that is a core element of The Long Dark. The developer also shared the official roadmap for the series’ 12-month expansion. The roadmap details the upcoming content and says it will arrive in multiple batches over an eight to ten week schedule.
Tales from the Far Territory will take players to the Far Line, which serves as a hub for other locations such as an industrial mine, an abandoned airfield, and a mountain pass. The content of the upcoming expansion will also include various game mechanics such as Insomnia Affliction and Glimmer Fog that will force players to find new ways to survive in the Outer Territory. The first is a rather strange state that can work after “exposure to certain influences.” And the last one is a strange phenomenon that is observed only in this region and “charges the air and the earth with electrostatic energy”, which leads to technical problems in electronic devices.
Along with new gameplay features, the paid expansion will introduce new items such as portable shortwave and travois to offer a more immersive survival experience. It is worth noting that the add-on also has three new story stories. New Tales will take players on a perilous journey that uncovers the region’s strange past that will “build the story of Big Bear Island”, ultimately adding to the Wintermute storyline.
The first part of the long-awaited Tales from the Far Territory expansion is due out on Steam and Epic Games in December, ushering in a whole new journey in The Long Dark on PC. The expansion is also slated to arrive on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch in 2023, although an exact release date is unknown.
