Chilling narration from real stalkers
The eight-episode Netflix crime series I’m a Stalker is a spin-off of the original crime series I’m an Assassin. The only difference between the two shows is that the crimes committed by the defendants are much more disturbing and scary in this new series. Who hasn’t followed someone’s social media account these days?
We’ve seen memes where people joke about knowing their first date’s extended family by name due to stalking them online long before the date. However, the modern notion of stalking is very different from the kind of stalking this show enthralls viewers on.
The show, in eight episodes, follows the crimes of eight stalkers who, at some point in their lives, went so far as to terrorize their victims to the point that those victims had to press charges against them. The show, like its predecessor, focuses on defendants who are in police custody for aggravated assault and stalking people, in most cases their partner(s).
While some today may think it’s normal for partners to track each other’s cell phones with GPS to find them or check social media accounts, the incidents here are much more sinister.
These criminals resort to old-fashioned methods of following their victims in disguise and end up attacking them when they least expect it. This is the case with most of the defendants in the Netflix original series I’m a Stalker, where the victims tell viewers about what their ex-partners did following them, even when they broke up or when they were dating someone else. .
The crimes become serious when some of the defendants are either accused of murder due to an excessive stalking propensity, or in other cases where the victims are forced to maintain a cordial relationship with their stalker because they have children. The show is a real deal and I’m talking about Joe Goldberg from Netflix’s You brought to life!
When defendants talk about their crimes and claim that they are aware that they did something wrong, and yet decided to do it, it’s terrible. Listening to them recount the incidents sends chills down their spines knowing that they are capable of committing these crimes after they are eventually released – if released at all. The show can be watched quickly and true crime lovers can devour it in a day.
The episodes follow the format in which the stalker is interviewed as he tells his side of the story. The victims are also interviewed as they retell their side of the story, recalling their traumatic incidents. There are other testimonies from witnesses, as well as victims’ families, who talk about how the stalking incident affected them.
Other than that, there are no gory or disturbing scenes in the show, except for the sinister narration that can make carefree people chill due to the intensity of the harassment and aggravated assault. As a woman, the show is much more intense and frightening because most of the victims are women and the harassment is carried out by their partners. I Am A Stalker is much more fun to watch compared to its predecessor, I Am A Killer, so it’s a must see.
