undermined India’s progress with the scalps of Rishab Pant and Suryakumar Yadav before Shreyas and Sanju Samson led the recovery.
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss to choose the first pitch against India in the first match of the series. Williamson has talked about sticking to the ODI plan and says players are looking forward to this series. India captain Shikhar Dhawan said he could also bowl first, but he has no problem with first either. He believes that these ODIs provide a good opportunity for youth to prove their skills.
After a year’s dose of T20 cricket, it’s time to shift focus to the 50-over format as the 2023 ODI World Cup is just a few months away. India and New Zealand will also take part in a 3-match series starting Friday in Auckland.
India, third in the men’s ODI rankings, automatically qualified for next year’s World Cup thanks to being the host country. This was the year when their first choice players such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, K.L. Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumra have not had consistent starts in the ODI series, mainly due to their busy cricket schedule.
Rookie southpaw Shikhar Dhawan will once again take over the captaincy and will in all likelihood open the pitch with Shubman Gill. The duo have amassed a three-hundred-year-old grandstand in eight ODIs this year and are looking to advance their cause with spectacular performances against New Zealand.

Suryakumar Yadav will look to bring his excellent T20I form and 360-degree game into the ODI while Rishab Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson and Deepak Hooda will form the mid-range. Hooda can also be a handy sixth bowling option that India has missed out on lately and can form a spin attack that is a three-way battle between Washington Sundar, Kuldip Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal.
In terms of bowling, Deepak Chahar, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur could form an attack in bowling. But there is a chance that Arshdeep Singh, India’s T20I finder this year, will get his debut ODI cap and the same goes for Umran Malik.
New Zealand, on the other hand, will be hoping their mascot captain, Kane Williamson, does his best in the ODI. Williamson struggled to get the acceleration he wanted in the T20I. But with his ability to spend a lot of time in the middle, he can use that to his advantage and score big in ODIs.
