Iran goalkeeper Ali Beiranvand will miss the World Cup match against Wales with a concussion, leaving Hossein Hosseini’s likely replacement to face star Gareth Bale. Iran, which finished last in Group B after losing 6-2 to England, will take on Wales on Friday at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium.
Hosseini already faced intimidating opponents in Qatar when he came into play after Beiranvand was stretched out in the first half of Monday’s opening tournament loss before England opened the scoring. Beiranvand was allowed to continue playing by Iran’s training headquarters after colliding with a teammate, but he later collapsed on the field and was taken to a local hospital.
Iran only said that Beiranvand had a nose injury and that the goalkeeper returned with the team on Tuesday wearing a mask. But Beiravnand has been diagnosed with a concussion, so he will be ruled out in accordance with the organizer’s measures to return to the game. Iranian head coach Carlos Queros confirmed at a pre-match press conference that Beiranvand would not play.
The coach said the defense would be a team effort, without specifically naming his player in the Wales starting line-up. “This is a medical protocol that we must follow,” Chieros said. “He won’t play tomorrow but will be ready for the next game.”
In response to the FAW, FIFA confirmed that fans wearing Rainbow Wall bucket hats and rainbow flags will be allowed to enter the stadium for @Cymrumatch against Iran on Friday.
Bale converted a penalty in the 82nd minute to give Wales a 1–1 draw with the United States in the first leg. The draw gave Wales a point in their first World Cup match since 1958 and a play-off within reach. Bale, who played for Major League Soccer’s LAFC last season, has now scored 41 goals in 109 international matches.
Bale has struggled with injuries and fitness for most of the year but scored a header for LAFC in the MLS Cup Championship earlier this month. LAFC won on penalties after a 3-3 draw with Philadelphia.
