The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Edition is the second special presentation film from Marvel Studios currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar Malaysia.
The synopsis reads:
In the Guardians of the Galaxy holiday special, the Guardians, who are supposed to make Christmas a memorable one for Quill, travel to Earth in search of the perfect gift. The Marvel Studios special featured Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff, featuring Vin Diesel as Groot and Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Sean Gunn and The Old 97’s with Michael Rooker and Kevin Bacon.
Animated flashback to when Yondu was still alive and Star-Lord was still a child
Surprisingly, the Guardians of the Galaxy holiday special kicks off with a short animated sequence that takes place while Yondu is still alive and Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, is still a baby. Apparently, Peter teaches Yondu all things Christmas.
Looks like Michael Rooker is back to reprise his role and voice Yondu. The end credits confirm this.
Cosmo spoke for the first time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Cosmo the dog had already appeared in the credits of 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy but never spoke. In the comics, he/she is a telepathic/telekinetic dog with a Russian accent, whose origin is actually from a canine astronaut from Earth.
This is the first time we see Cosmo using his telepathic and telekinetic powers in the MCU. She is voiced by none other than Maria Bakalova, who is best known for her roles in 2020’s Borat’s Next Movie and 2022’s Bodies, Bodies, Bodies.
After ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’, Guardians now help recover
That’s what the Guardians are currently doing. If you don’t remember, Thanos destroyed Knowhere in the 2018 Avengers Infinity War in search of the Infinity Stones.
Drax and Mantis go to Earth to find Kevin Bacon
As the trailers teased, Drax and Mantis go to Earth to find and bring Kevin Bacon to Peter to cheer him up for Christmas since they haven’t found Gamora yet.
Reference to Kevin Bacon’s first feature film role
After kidnapping Kevin Bacon, he was asked about his past “exploits”, including, as Mantis puts it, “when you fought and defeated masked super-powered assassin Jason Voorhees in the woods”?
This is actually a reference to Kevin Bacon’s first ever role in a feature film, who was a minor character killed by an arrow to the neck in the 1980s film Friday the 13th, which was the first in the horror franchise.
If you’ve never seen it, check it out below, it’s an iconic pop culture horror movie slasher:
DC Easter egg, interesting considering recent events
Yes, this is the obvious DC Comics Batman Easter egg that anyone can catch. What’s interesting, though, is that by the time The Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special comes out, James Gunn will already be co-CEO and co-chairman of DC Studios.
Nebula gives Bucky’s hand to the rocket
It’s a funny throwback to when Rocket asked Bucky, “How much for a hand?” in Avengers Infinity War 2018. Rocket later says, “Oh, I’ll take that hand.”
Four years later, he finally does it.
Yondu gave Star-Lord his Elemental Cannons for Christmas
It is touching.
Mantis reveals that she is Peter’s sister
Praying Mantis reveals that Ego was also her father and that she is actually Peter’s half-sister.
Scene after credits
There is a post-credits scene, but as expected, it’s just another joke scene where Rocket and Cosmo put Christmas lights on Groot. It ends with Rocket saying, “Now we should have another special,” which is probably a joke, or it could mean another Guardians of the Galaxy special is in the works. Who knows?
That’s it guys, until the next one, excelsior!
